TECHNOLOGY NOTES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SHOWCASE AND SCIENCE FAIR PROJECTS

  • Using a wiki

Easily make your own hiwebpage. You can post pictures, videos, audio, text, etc. You can also Embed things you make on other sites such as Prezi, Glogster, Youtube, Voki, etc.

You will need the wiki username and password you were given during your language arts class at the beginning of the year. For most students, the username was  your first name and first inititial of your last name written all together, such as bleitner or rcausarano.  The password was a combination of a fruit, a number, and a piece of fruit, such as apple5moose.

If you lost your wiki information, I’ll show Ms Frisch, Ms. Leitner and Mr. Causarano how to reset your login info

Once you log on, remember to always “show all content” and to never “display only secure content.”

As long as you’re logged on, click on “Create a page.” Any page you create MUST always have your name in it. That way we don’t have to worry about multiple people creating a page of the same name and accidentally erasing the work of others.

You are going to choose to create a blank page, and you are going to choose to put it in the Environmental Showcase folder or the Science Fair folder for your grade. Now you can click “Save." This page is now yours to edit. Remember, only edit your page. You can only edit in “edit” mode.

If you are copying a picture from another website you simply copy and paste. If you are using your own photo, you need to upload the file to the wiki first.

If you want to upload something you made in a Web 2.0 program such as Glogster, Voki, Prezi, Slideshare, or even Youtube, you’ll need to click on the “insert” icon and then choose either video or html. If you choose to do this, you will need to have “embed” code to enter.

  • Recording audio

Under All Programs, Accessories, choose Sound Recorder

  • Recording video or taking pictures.

You can use a FlipCam, a digital camera or your cellphone

  • Editing video and audio clips to make a file that is playable on your wiki

Use Windows Live Movie Maker. If it isn’t already on your computer, it’s a free download. Google it.

"Save Project" when you’re still working on your product. "Save Movie" when you’re done and want to upload it to a wiki, Youtube, Facebook, etc.

  • PowerPoint

Slideshare.net  is a program that allows you to upload a PowerPoint presentation so you can make it an embeddable file on a wiki or other website.

  • Prezi

Go to Prezi.com

Instead of each slide being like a page in a notebook, each frame is like being zoomed in to a part of a huge virtual poster.

It is stored online. You can edit it on any computer, and it is easy to embed your results on a wiki.

You can save it and use embed code.

  • Research

The BCPS databases, which are under the Students tab on the BCPS webpage contain several places where you can find academic research articles. Good places to start to find these are MasterFile and SIRS.
